Building Diversity & Community Empowerment

The collaborative construction team included Mortenson's joint venture partner Messer Construction and associate partners Pinnacle Construction and Business Resource Group. Others involved included a dedicated community outreach and engagement team focused on building a diverse, inclusive workforce. The team also prioritized partnering with local businesses to help strengthen the local economy and maximize opportunities for women and minority-owned businesses throughout the construction process.

These programs aren’t about checking boxes. It’s about positively impacting the community and providing equal opportunities to small and diverse businesses. Many of the businesses involved had never participated in a project of this size. To prepare them, the team offered training and apprenticeships to help workers develop skills they could use on future construction projects.

Community involvement and outreach is an important part of each sports construction project. In Nashville, the team worked with two neighborhood elementary schools. At Napier Elementary, the project team tackled much needed gardening and landscaping efforts. They also built a new soccer field and supplied soccer and playground equipment for the students. A highlight for the children at Fall-Hamilton Elementary was having Tempo, the Nashville SC mascot make an appearance at a school fundraiser organized by the project team. Additionally, food and supply drives were organized to support community members in need.

For Mortenson, the GEODIS Park project was about more than building an impressive sports stadium. The goal was to leave a lasting impact on the community long after project completion.
