How do you expand your musical horizons?

Mortenson completed the first phase of the Wheaton College Performing Arts Center (Armerding Center for Music and the Arts) in 2017, which included rebuilding three stories and the basement of Armerding Hall, the former science building. We are currently completing the second phase of the project, which began construction in early 2019. This includes the complete demolition of Breyer Hall and construction of a new Concert Hall in its place. This 648 seat venue will hold performances for the public and is part of Wheaton College’s long-standing commitment to its music program, as well as to serving local, regional, and national audiences.

Some project features include:

  • Armerding is 52,597 SF, the Concert Hall will be 37,997 SF for a total of 90,594 SF
  • The building was fully coordinated through BIM and laser scanning was used to capture existing conditions
  • The concert hall shell will be lined on the inside with 262 individual Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG)
  • The concert hall shell is made up of 55' tall, 14" thick solid concrete panels, the heaviest panel weighing 78,000 lbs
